Geeshie Wiley is remarkable. Her haunting voice -- reminiscent of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith -- makes her music memorable enough. But she's also remarkable in that she's the first woman Delta blues player I've ever heard. Her guitar playing is simple, but she tends to chose notes that aren't in many other Delta players' repetoires. Sorrow drips from her voice and strings.
